Bob earlier played with a minor ice hockey team from Peterborough, Ontario in the 1977 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Between 1980 to 1983 he played junior ice hockey for the Ontario Hockey League with Peterborough Petes.

He was mostly remembered for his time with Pittsburgh Penguins, but also played for the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, and New York Rangers In 1991 and 1992 he won two Stanley Cups as a member of the Penguins. Further, he also appeared in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals with Detroit and won the 1997 World Championships as a member of Team Canada.

Additionally, during the entire 1998-1999 game season he played for the Hartford Wolf Pack in NHL prior to retiring in 1999. He also worked as the San Jose Sharks captain during the 1993 to 1994 season and also part of 1995.
