Bob joined WKOW-TV in 1989 as Chief Meteorologist, a role he has held ever since. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recently honored him with the Wisconsin Silver Circle Lifetime Achievement Award. The Silver Circle Honor is bestowed upon broadcasters who have made consistent, long-term contributions to their business and culture for more than 25 years.
Bob, the senior chief meteorologist at WKOW-TV, earned his bachelor’s degree in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in 1979 and began his career in 1980 at Weather Central, a Madison-based private weather forecasting company specialized in forecasts for ski resorts, agri-business, power grids, the Wisconsin TV Network, and more than 40 other radio and television stations nationally.
Under the direction of broadcast meteorologist Terry Kelly, Weather Central produced one of the first tv weather graphic computers. Bob was on staff in 1980, when a tv weather graphic system based on one of the first Apple personal computers was introduced.
During his time at Weather Central, he saw the gradual growth of new generations of weather graphics technologies, which revolutionized the television weather broadcast industry.
WKOW-TV also received weather broadcast services from Weather Central. Throughout the 1980s, Bob worked as a radio meteorologist for WKOW on weekends and weekday mornings. In addition to his television responsibilities, Bob was promoted to General Manager and, later, Vice President at Weather Central.
He is a member of the Station Scientist Committee of the American Meteorological Society. The committee urges television meteorologists to serve as “station scientists,” educating the public on weather-related topics such as climate change. Bob is a firm believer in climate change education.
In addition to discussing climate change with his audiences during his shows, he has delivered several presentations to school, political, and faith-based organizations. He is a founder of the Citizen’s Energy Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan coalition focusing on public strategies to solve climate change solutions.
