Carlson got his first taste for on-air news in high school, anchoring a weekly show at a Salt Lake area TV station. He later took his enthusiasm to BYU and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.
By the year of 2004, he started his professional TV career at KNDU in Kennewick, Washington, and in 2008, Brian joined ABC4 Utah. Besides that, he also earned a regional Emmy for his report titled “Spice in the City,” in which Brian purchased drugs undercover and was instrumental in assisting police capture an illegal drug dealer.
He was also the first TV reporter to tell the story of Ron Stallworth, a young black detective who infiltrated the KKK. Brian’s report became the catalyst to the Oscar award-winning film “BlacKkKlansman” directed by Spike Leee, covered in 2014. Moreover, he also covered as the announcer for Utah’s premier lifestyle in show Good Things Utah between 2015 to 2021.
