He has served as the lead news anchor at the station since the year 1974. Previously, he served in the United States Air Force and he holds a commercial pilot certificate. Chuck kicked off his journalism career in Mississippi where he worked at WLOX-TV located in Biloxi as a reporter. Later on, he left the station and joined WDAM-TV located in Laurel.

Chuck’s first major market anchoring job was at WNAC-TV located in Boston in 1972. Chuck was employed as part of a two-man anchor team and later on made the solo anchor of the station’s news broadcasts. Chuck ended the newscast with a commentary in his final broadcast at WNAC-TV. Chuck joined NBC News in March 1974 working as the sole anchor of WNBC-TV’s News 4, New York.
Ultimately, Chuck got promoted and became the lead anchor at 6 pm and 11 pm. He became the unofficial “dean” of New York-area TV news anchors in 2013, by then, WABC-TV anchor Bill Beutel retired after almost 4 decades of service. Chuck exceeded Beutel as New York’s most skilled English-language news anchor in 2011. Five years later, he replaced Rafael Pineda of Spanish-language WXTV as the longest-serving anchor in New York TV history. In his first 2 decades with NBC, he mostly appeared as an NBC News correspondent on the network and regularly anchored the network’s prime-time news updates.
