Jeanette Lee Cance Diagnosis

George’s wife and the Billiards legend Jeanette Lee has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer, according to the American Poolplayers Association. Known as “The Black Widow,” the 49-year-old and mom of three is revered as one of the top pool players of all time.

“I intend to bring the same resolve I brought to the billiards table to this fight,” Lee said in a statement released Wednesday. “Jim Valvano so eloquently told us to ‘Never give up.’ I owe it to my three young daughters to do exactly that,” she added, likely referring to the late college basketball coach who also had cancer and died in 1993.

A GoFundMe page set up by friends of Jeanette Lee and has raised more than $67K (as of Feb 18th, 2021) reads;

It is with heavy hearts that we share that our friend and billiards icon, Jeanette Lee, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer.  The cancer has fully metastasized into her lymph nodes and the prognosis is dire. At this stage, her doctors say she has a few months to a year left to live. In typical Black Widow fashion, she has vowed to fight the progress of her disease as fiercely as possible with both chemotherapy, which has already begun, and a succession of upcoming surgeries.

Jeanette’s largest and most pressing concern is the well being of her three young girls Cheyenne (16), Chloe (11) and Savannah (10).  Jeanette has been a single mother for the last several years. The future care, well-being and education of her girls is the biggest cause of anxiety for her.

Jeanette Lee Career

Lee started playing pool in 1989. She went on to rank as the No. 1 female pool player in the world during the 1990s and received the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Sportsperson of the Year Award in 1998.

She was three times runner-up at the World Nine-ball Championships (women’s), from 1993–96. In addition to many top finishes on the WPBA Tour, she won the gold medal for the United States at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan, and won the ladies’ US$25,000 winner-take-all Tournament of Champions twice, in 1999 and 2003. Lee also wrote The Black Widow’s Guide to Killer Pool.

In 2001, Lee challenged Efren Reyes to a race-to-13 exhibition match at nine-ball, in Manila, Philippines, but lost 4-13. For 2007, she was ranked #4 in Pool & Billiard Magazine’s “Fans’ Top 20 Favorite Players” poll. In 2013, Lee was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.
