Gumbel informed his brother Bryant Gumbel that was auditioning for a sports announcer at Chicago TV Station (WMAQ-TV) in 1973. He was selling hospital supplies in Detroit during his time at Chicago tv Station. Greg finally got the job and served WMAG-TV there for seven years. Gumbel replaced the sportscaster Dennis Swanson who went on to become ABC Sports president.
Prior to joining CBS Station, Greg served in New York City for WFAN, ESPN, and MSG radio Station. Gumbel anchored ESPN did “play-by-play” for early NBA games and was a shoe SportsCenter reporter. He then worked for Marv Albert on New York Knicks broadcasts as a backup announcer. He is proud of his career in journalism and cheering for good working together with NBA Station.
