John earned his high school diploma from Carrick High School. He thereafter matriculated at Indiana University, played baseball for three years, and was drafted in the 1988 MLB draft in his 7th round.
He entered the Pittsburgh Pirates on Jul 17, 1991. He played in the MLB minor leagues until 1996 when he quit the team to join the Florida Marlins. John spent two years as a bench player, staying there for two seasons. Moreso, he drove back to Pittsburgh Pirates in 1991 and played until 2001.
During his 11th season at the station, he had collected a .249 batting average with four home runs and 54 RBI in 461 games. His MLB record was 99 consecutive games without an error at 3rd base together with Jeff Cirillo.
