Bonds joined the Houston Police Department in 1967. Later in 1972, he was promoted to detective. He served as a detective for 41 years, investigating crimes in the Houston area, before he finally retired.
While still a detective, Bonds had a case that he could not let go of and this made him the subject of a highly acclaimed book, The Cop Who Wouldn’t Quit. The case involved a man, his wife, and an infant, who had all been shot in the head. No gun was found on the scene but the medical examiner ruled it a murder-suicide.
They claimed that the wife had shot the child, her husband, and then shot herself. However, Bonds was not buying that version of events and he spent two years investigating the crime before it was finally solved. Four men were arrested and sent to prison over those murders.
