Joe is a Cuban – American journalist, who after briefly working in radio, he moved to print journalism in the mid-1980s, working for United Press International as the Central American Bureau Chief but was known as Spanish International Network and as a print journalist.

He then worked for WTVJ from 1988 till May 1996 and as a television news reporter in Miami, in August the same year, he made history by being the first Cuban- American to host a network news program for the CBS News program This Morning. He left CBS in 2000 and became the anchor of a Telemundo morning show called Esta Manana.

He co-hosted, Telemundo Network’s first-morning news and entertainment show Esta Manana, and also Cada Da, the network’s public affairs show. He began hosting Enfoque con José Diaz-Balart, an interview program on Telemundo, in 2002 which happened once a  month which he interviewed a wide range of newsmakers, including presidential candidates and political leaders. In 2003 he returned as a news anchor to English-language television and his former Miami station WTVJ. He was working as a reporter for NBC by 2010.

He made history after becoming the first U.S. journalist to broadcast both English and Spanish newscasts on two networks at the same time this happened after he filled in for Contessa Brewer on MSNBC Live in the show’s 12 p.m. time slot from June 20 to 24, 2011. In September 2015 he was given his own one-hour daytime news program on MSNBC.His work with Telemundo Network enabled him to win an Emmy award. In the 1980s he won two Emmys, four Hispanic Excellence, and an Associated Press Award in Journalism Awards while working at WTVJ-TV in Miami. He also was awarded for being the best news anchor in the United States, a Du Pont and Peabody award, also the Orchid award.

Media 100 has named him best anchor thrice, also he was named one of the “100 most influential people in the United States by  Hispanic Business Magazine ”, he received the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Science in 2010. He received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television from Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable at the 10th Annual Hispanic Television Summit, produced by Schramm Marketing Group, in 2012.
