Joseph Epstein is an American writer who served as the editor of the magazine The American Scholar between 1975 and 1977. His writings have appeared in various books and other publications.

Despite the institution’s firm support on academic freedom and freedom of expression it does not support or agree with Mr. Epstein’s opinion and believes the designation of doctor is well deserved by anyone who has earned a Ph.D., an Ed.D., an M.D., or any other doctoral degree.
The institution further claimed that it is firmly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and strongly disagrees with Mr. Epstein’s misogynistic views.

In December Epstein published an article on the Wall Street Journal opinion piece about the “proper” use of the title “Doctor,”. He suggested that the soon-to-be First Lady Jill Biden should drop the Dr. from her public identification.
He argued that she is not a doctor and most people with PhDs and EdDs don’t use that honorific. He further added that her area of expertise education her alma mater in ways that suggested hose specifics somehow made her use of the title even more outrageous.
