Larry Murphy is a well-known Canadian previous professional ice hockey defenceman. Currently, Larry serves as a studio analyst for the Red Wings on Bally Sports Detroit. Initially, he played for more than 20 years in the National Hockey League, suiting up for the Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings.

He became the winner of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, the first of two was with Pittsburgh in both 1991 and 1992; and thereafter with Detroit in both 1997 and 1998. Additionally, Larry became inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Murphy became an alternate color analyst for the Detroit Red Wings on Fox Sports Detroit. He only did color broadcaster duties for Red Wing’s west coast road trips in place of Mickey Redmond, from 2003 to 2006 he shared this duty with previous teammate Pat Verbeek where they would alternate road trips. Thus, following the 2005–06 NHL season, Pat left the job as a broadcaster to become a scout for the Red Wings and Larry took over full-time on west coast road trips.

Moreso, in 2006, he started contributing as a studio analyst on pregames, post games as well as intermissions in which he does not broadcast. During the 2007–08 season, Larry began serving as a “Between the Benches” reporter for Fox Sports Detroit when Mickey Redmond was broadcasting and subbed for Mickey when he had surgery to get rid of a tumor on his lung.

It was declared on Feb 14, 2019, he would return as a studio analyst for the Red Wings on Fox Sports Detroit for the remainder of the 2018–19 season.
