Laura started her first job in television at KSBY stationed in San Luis Obispo before joining KFSN in based Fresno. In 1983, she went back to Southern California as a reporter at KABC-TV at the station’s bureau in Orange County. Laura covered many major stories as a reporter at KABC-TV, including the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and the Los Angeles Central Library Fire in 1986.
She began working as a weekend anchor in 1985, and three years later, she began anchoring KABC-TV’S 6 pm weekday evening newscast. She was named anchor for the station’s 5 pm and 11 pm newscasts in the year 1997. She became the first female Hispanic lead anchor in Los Angeles at an English-language TV station.
In September 2002, she joined KCBS-TV serving as a co-anchor of the CBS 2 News at 5 and 11 pm together with Harold Greene, and Paul Magers joined her as co-anchor in the year 2004. Laura was also among the past hosts of the groundbreaking Vista L.A. on KABC-TV.
