Maureen helped restart the campus radio station WZMB during her freshman year at East Carolina University. She was also hired at the NBC affiliate in nearby Washington N.C. station WITN to do morning cut-ins. She later went to work at WNCT in Greenville on weekends.
Maureen left school before graduating and was employed in Wilmington, North Carolina at WECT, where she worked as a nightside reporter and was later promoted to become a noon anchor. After serving for several years at WECT, She left the station and joined WMAZ in Macon, Georgia, where she worked as co-anchor and reporter. Furthermore, she also worked as the main anchor at the CBS affiliate, KREM 2 located in Spokane, Washington.
In 1990, Maureen was recruited to substitute Maury Povich on the nationally syndicated A Current Affair and hosted until 1994 when Penny Daniels overtook her. In 1995, she became a weekend anchor and reporter of the Los Angeles-based TV series known as Extra.
