He was employed as a pitching coach by the Idaho Falls Braves soon after withdrawing from playing baseball. He moved to San Diego after one year, where he was employed to work at Channel 4 as a color commentator and he served there for six years. During the MLB playoffs, he served for ESPN Radio as a guest analyst. In March 1999, he totally entered the station and since 2002 has been featured on Wednesday Night Baseball. It was made clear that Rick signed a multi-year extension with ESPN in 2018.
