He began his journalism career for WCTI in New Bern, where he worked in the bureau in Jacksonville and covered Camp Lejeune. He was raised in Eastern North Carolina, was used to evacuating from hurricanes – but now, as a reporter, he was in the middle of the storm four times as hurricanes swept across North Carolina in his first year on the job.
